Hivemind is written with the intent to capture the feel of a campy 1960s spy movie. It will have action, romance, and betrayal-- and all the drama that comes with it. Living the life of an agent is equal parts glamorous and deadly, and if you're very lucky, the only life on the line is yours; but for many of our agents, things are more complicated. Our characters sheets handle themes such as suicide, violence, and drug abuse, as well as loyalty, faith, and doing the right thing above all else. We believe that a well-rounded game includes both joy and tragedy, and we want our players to be able to experience the full spectrum of intense joy and sorrow-- to laugh when the world is broken beyond repair, and to cry when it'll all be okay in the end.
Players will assume the role of a secret agent from one of two organizations: The Hive, or Calendar Corp., or a shady information broker with their own agenda from their Associates. Gameplay will occur over two full days, likely Friday and Saturday. Mandatory workshops will take place Friday morning followed by a lunch and dress break before game-on.
For some characters, the mysteries within their sheets are not mysteries we intend for you to solve. We love asking 'why?', and we love it when you answer 'how'. Some of these mysteries are intended solely to propel your character forward with their own motivations so that you may experience and explore further questions, even if your character may never receive the closure that they seek. If you do not prefer this form of play, please let us know in your application.
Themes
Hivemind is about a lot of things, but at it's core, it's about identity.
Are you yourself, or are you the company you keep? Who are you when the world is falling apart? Our other central themes include: cold war tension, technology, living and dying by a code of ethics, and mourning departed friends. You don't get to be a top agent without seeing some friends fall in the line of duty.
Other things you can expect to find are strange signals from nowhere, and an element of mystery that borders on horror. Although nothing explicit will be shown, you can count on odd, ghostly recordings and a sense of eeriness. If you don't like that sort of thing, this may not be the game for you.
There will be light puzzle mechanics. However, we are not looking to trick or frustrate players. Characters that specialize in things like ciphers and codes will, at player request, have access to solutions if they so choose. Just ask a staff member!

About Your Sheets
Your character sheet is collaborative. There will be fields on your sheet that you may edit, marked by dark orange boxes. While a lot of your sheet is written by us, there will be areas where you will have the agency to personalize your Hivemind character. There will be a few short questions in your history sections you will have the option of answering as well.
Our hope is that this will allow you to engage with your Agent in a more personalized way, as well as give you opportunities to pencil in elements that may appear in-game that would not only excite you, but make sense to how you intend to characterize your Agent.
Don't want to do homework? No problem! The sheets will be pre-filled with our own writing. If you do not change this part of your sheet by game, we will assume you're going to be using what we've filled out for you.
You will notice certain keywords on your sheets such as 'Department - STINGER', Skill - Strength, etc. We will go into more detail on your sheets what these mean for you once you get them.

Characters
Safety
The game will use fairly basic check-in mechanics ("Off-game: are you okay?" or thumbs up/thumbs down, for example) and both pre-game and game-on calibration. They will be discussed during workshop. We aren't trying to overcomplicate this, and believe the fastest and most efficient way to be sure you and your partner are aligned are by communicating candidly. Consent is required for acts of physical violence or intimacy, however, players should expect and be okay with arm/shoulder touches and grabs, loud noises, and visible aggression. We'll go into more detail during game, but in summary:

Safety
Shade your eyes, get the hell out! Use this to leave a scene.

Look Down
Bikini area is off limits! Utilize Fade-To-Black.

Sex
Press your fist to your head. This signals an OOC convo.

Violence

Thumbs down - I'm not good/Stop
